EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

In 2019, the Indy Pro Basketball initiative with global exposure, regional competitive play, and individual professional development are designed to advance career opportunities.

Created to help provide player data, coaching data, tracking year-round statistics, and scouting data to help teach NBA Basketball skills and techniques to prepare players for the next level.

The Indy Pro Basketball Showcase, Los Angeles, will be April 22-24th, 2019. The new identity will honor the development of basketball players and coaches to the professional level complete with NBA Scouts and GM’s.

VISION

  • Start with the Invitational Showcase during the dead period to get the buzz going for upcoming two-week summer programs for the Independent Basketball Camp and for a sponsor(s).
  • Put on a two-week program with six games and training/practice alternating days with the same elements as Invitational Showcase but expanded to gather a realistic amount of stats and training. Scouted players will feed US professional leagues and FIBA leagues.
  • Start in one major city, Los Angeles, then expand to all major US cities with a concentration of professional talent. New York to follow, Chicago, Miami, etc.
  • Eventually grow to international camps (Canada, Bahamas, Serbia, Australia) to feed US professional leagues and FIBA leagues.
  • Work with foundations and sponsors to help players and coaches who find they may not have the skills to make it to the next level to find a rewarding new career. Help sponsor/support players and coaches for career training and opportunities by companies. Include change agents and mental health professionals to help with the transition. (Example: Heart of Life Foundation).

WHY THIS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FILLS A NEED

In speaking with numerous NBA and NBA G-League players, coaches and GM’s, we solidified the current needs and gaps which exist today in developing professionals to get them properly prepared to have the best chance at an opportunity to play at the highest levels in professional basketball. Here are just a few gaps identified:

  • Players, “My game cannot be described by points, rebounds and assists alone, how can I prove I can compete on the highest level and an NBA team needs me?”
  • Coaches, “I have nowhere to hone my skills as a coach that can develop players, and there are no measurements used to rate coaches to prove I am a coach that can make a difference and understands how to get a team to play well.”
  • GM’s, “It’s so hard to find the under the radar players, the analytics used are sometimes too complicated and most scouts and coaches still rely on the “eye test”, we need a way to assess the complete player and coach, to understand their true strengths and what they bring to the team. Today, we don’t emphasize passing and touches enough, would like to see more of those things.”

(Note: Since we are a players and coaches program, we do not have a dog in the race, so therefore, not trying to make money off of them, but trying to help them get where they want to go, so everyone opened up to us.)

THE OPPORTUNITY

  • Professional players do not understand what the NBA, G-League or FIBA teams are looking for from them, especially in tryouts. It’s a mystery, and they rely on trainers and agents who don’t necessarily know what to tell their clients. Agents get their information from the GM’s mostly.
  • NBA scouts/Teams are looking at things for call-ups and opportunities, and we found out what they are looking for, seems to be a mystery to most in the industry.
  • Although stats and analytics are being used in the league, it is sometimes overwhelming for those coaching and trying to make decisions. There is much more to how or why a player is playing a certain way than stats can tell you. Analytics aren’t simple enough for everyone to be able to discuss why they are important.
  • Players do not have access and can’t afford high tech assessment wearables and software. High tech sports companies need access to professionals to test out their products and give feedback as well as promote products on social media.
  • There seems to not be a decent easy way to promote more teamwork and sharing of the ball with the current standard stats kept creating an atmosphere of “me ball” and racking up stats seems to be the only way to get noticed.
  • Coaches in the G-League are looking to get promoted and don’t seem to have each players interests as a priority. The players feel they are getting cheated out of showing their skills to the NBA Scouts when they are on the bench leaving a lot of players disgruntled. Older players think they have a shot at the NBA and that is not true, so they become role players, but are relied on for the coaches to get promoted by helping win games

THE SOLUTION

  • Create a professionals development program/camp intensive, where the focus is on what the NBA, G-League and FIBA teams are looking for in terms of what is expected in a tryout and in games when being scouted for both players and coaches.
  • Mix high intensity, directed training and testing with games (extended analytics and overall score for both a player and a coach). Training will help coaches develop players for games to be assessed and to help players update their current mindset and play to give them the skills, both physical and mental, to perform at a high level. Also educate players and coaches giving them the inside scoop on how they will be scouted to prepare them.
  • Invite current and former NBA, NBA G-League and FIBA development/assistant coaches, players and trainers to coach the players. Bring in current and past NBA coaches to train the coaches.
  • Collaborate with current and former NBA Coaches and players to invite under the radar talent from the pool of graduating college seniors and current professional players to participate in our program making it an elite and highly desired destination for professional development.
  • Use high tech solutions to help players and coaches explain why they should be hired at the next level.
  • Partner with a company(s) in the sports and basketball industry which is looking towards high tech solutions, is progressive, and cares about the players and coaches to help them succeed.
  • Partner with like-minded foundations to help support the athletes to find jobs outside of playing/coaching when they cannot find opportunities.
