2020 NBA Finals: Miami brings the Heat in Game 5

October 9, 2020

The Lakers entered Game 5 of the 2020 NBA Finals against the Miami Heat as the favorites to win but sometimes things don’t go as planned as they fall to the Miami Heat 111-108.

During the first quarter Dwight Howard and Jimmy Butler picked up a double technical as it seemed like Butler was holding Howard by the waist as both were under the basket. You can clearly see the frustration in the Heat and Jimmy Butler with that type of play here in the NBA Finals. We knew that the Heat are a scrappy type of team; they will fight for each other against anyone and you are seeing that here in Game 5 as they are on the verge of losing in the NBA Finals.

Lakers F Anthony Davis goes down late in the first quarter with a heel contusion, which was the same problem he dealt with early in the playoffs. The Heat came out in the first half aggressive as they led as much as 11 points but could not fight hard enough to maintain the lead as LeBron James has also been aggressive of his own with 17 points and 3-4 from the three point line.

The Lakers go on a run late in the 2nd quarter as they cut the lead down to four as the Heat lead the Lakers in Halftime.

In the 3rd quarter the Miami Heat have been playing with great energy as you can clearly see a desperate team playing for their lives here in Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Jimmy Butler has been playing amazing here in this game with 27 point through the middle of the 3rd quarter shooting 9-13 from the field.

LeBron James also having a magnificent game here in the NBA Finals with 28 points on 11-14 from the field as the 3rd quarter is winding down. The Heat are up 82-78 and it seems like this will be a closer game than what people imagined. Anthony Davis goes to the line late in the 3rd quarter as he makes both and has 20 points and 9 rebounds.

Coming into the 4th quarter with the Lakers go down as much as 11 early in the 4th until LeBron James hits another three as he is now 6-8 from three in the game.

The Lakers find a way back in the game as they are only down 4 with 7:21 remaining in the game with the Heat trying to force a Game 6 on Sunday Night. Watching this game right now reminds me of the 1998 NBA Finals with Jordan against the Jazz as LeBron James is trying to win his 4th NBA Championship as he hits to clutch free throws late in the 4th to tie the game.

As the last few seconds of the game is coming down, Lakers F Markieff Morris throws the ball away being down one point with less than five seconds in Game 5. Morris got the rebound of the missed shot by Danny Green and looked like he was passing to Davis down low in the basket but while he threw the ball away, LeBron was wide open to the right of Morris on the three point line.

Give major credit to Jimmy Butler who put the team on his back and carried the Heat to a Game 5 victory as he scores a team high 35 points in 47 minutes. Heat F Duncan Robinson stepped up big shooting 7-13 from three. It took Miami to have certain players to have a career game in order to win. The Lakers gave up 111 points in this game which they played pretty bad defense. All they have to do is keep the Heat under 100 points and you can win this series.

Things did not go the way the Lakers would like after a great performance by LeBron James with 40 points 13 rebounds and 7 assists as the Lakers come up short in the last seconds of the game and the Heat force a Game 6 on Sunday Night 7:30ET/4:30PT on ABC.
