Clippers collapse in Game 2 against the Mavs

August 19, 2020

While the Los Angeles Clippers took Game 1 on Monday after the ejection that had the NBA world go crazy when Kristaps Porzingis was sent to the showers early after getting his 2nd technical foul of the game. Even Lakers Star LeBron James had something to say.

The Dallas Mavs came out scoring and took a 15-2 lead which led to a time out by Clippers Coach Doc Rivers which seemed to me that Doc should’ve called a time out sooner, especially when the team is letting them walk all over them to start Game 2 of the West First Round. Mavs F Luka Doncic came out strong shooting, passing and controlling the pace of the game so far. One player who did not come in with some fire behind them was Clippers F Paul George after scoring 0 points and 4 rebounds in the first half of the game. George always gets the opportunity to hide behind Kawhi’s greatness and I’m shinning light on the situation. Kawhi is keeping the Clippers in the game by putting up 18 points with the help of Lemon Pepper Lou adding 14 points with 5-8 shooting so far in the first half.

Coming into the 3rd quarter they continued to play the same way with Luka coming out scoring and passing and on his way in picking up a triple double with 26 points 8 rebounds and 7 assists through the 3rd quarter. Mavs G Seth Curry began to shoot the ball well after having a slow start in this game thus far as he give the Mavs a little push needed while Luka is on the bench. Tim Hardaway Jr and Curry continued to play well while the Clippers when flat going down 13 points late in the 3rd quarter.

The Clippers have some flaws in they’re game especially on the defensive end while Dallas is running and gunning like the old Warriors teams. The Mavs have been shooting 52% from the three point line. Mavs Luka Doncic picks up his 5th foul with 11:37 left in the 4th, while the Mavs are up 12, they decide to take him out of the game. As Kawhi comes into the game in the 4th quarter and try to get the Clippers back in the game but couldn’t.

Dallas has been getting in the Clippers head by playing great defense and the Clippers picking up offensive fouls which allowed the Mavs to capitalize on that. Clippers when down as much as 18 points in the 4th quarter with Paul George and Kawhi on the court. We need to highlight the mistakes the Clippers have done in this game so far with allowing 40+ point in the paint and giving up 8 offensive rebounds and 12 turnovers for the Clippers with 7 minutes still remaining in the ball game. While Luka has been on the bench since he picked up his 5th foul early in the 4th quarter, the Mavs turned up a switch and took over the game with great efforts by Trey Burke with 16 points and Seth Curry adds 15 points off the bench.

Paul George only has 14 points on 4-15 shooting which is the reason why the Clippers are loosing. George has to perform better and be more consistent in the playoffs as we all know he likes to disappear in big moments. George needs to be hold accountable with his play while playing under Kawhi Leonard as the star of the team. We clearly know he’s a top 20 player in the league today and being paired with a top 3 player, they should be able to do more or at least with the open shots George is getting, he should be able to make them.

Clippers made a small run towards the end of the game but was not enough for them to complete a comeback. Luka Doncic passed Kareem-Abdul Jabbar for the most points through his first 2 playoffs games with 70. He ended the night with 28 points 8 rebounds and 7 assists and picking up his first career playoff game win.  Game 3 is scheduled on Friday at 9ET/6PT on TNT.
