Vander Blue outstanding summer league play was just enough to land himself a contract with the Lakers!
So it’s official! 2016 G-League MVP Vander Blue and the Lakers have came to an agreement on a partially guaranteed contract. After the way Vander Blue played in this years NBA summer league I knew that if the Lakers didn’t offer the guard anything someone else would. Vander Blue is a combo guard who can really score the ball, this summer league Blue averaged 15.0 ppg and for the Los Angeles defenders in the G-league Blue averaged 24.8 ppg. Not only can Vander Blue score the ball but he’s versatile, Blue can play the shooting and point guard position if needed. The Lakers had Blue more off the ball during summer league, but there were multiple times when the Lakers had Blue bringing down the ball when Lonzo was resting.
Vander Blue does not just bring scoring to this Lakers team but the 6-foot-4 combo guard also brings toughness. The best word to describe Vander Blue is fearless. While watching Vander Blue play the 6-foot-4 guard repeatedly attacked the basket, and in the tight games the Lakers were in Blue took and made big shots. Blue is a guard that can play inside and out when Blue gets the ball hes normally looking to drive to the basket, but he can also spot up for three or go off the dribble and pull up for a mid range jump shot. I can see Vander Blue being a great spark plug off the bench with the energy he brings to the game and his ability to go for 25 at any given night.
Vander Blue will be going up against stiff competition, not just against other teams but against his own team. The Lakers have a pretty deep back court with Lonzo Ball, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Jordan Clarkson, Josh Hart, and Tyler Ennis. I like the pick up by the Lakers and it will be interesting to see what role Vander Blue will play for the Lakers.
