Mookie Betts helps Dodgers win 10th game of the short season

August 7, 2020

By Fredo Cervantes

Julio Urias is making his 3rd start of the short season and looking sharp as a guy the dodgers could be depending on lots more than ever before. Julio was being looked at throughout the organization for the past 2 years as the next Fernando Valenzuela. The potential he brings on the field is exciting to watch as ESPN’s insider Pedro Gomez mentioned on ESPN 710 radio in Los Angeles, that he believes Julio might be the surprise pitching arm in 2020.

Dodgers open up the bottom of the first with a lead off walk and then a double by Mookie Betts and had runners on second and third and nobody out and the dodgers found a way to leave the runners on. Mookie returning from his finger injury and coming up with a double in the first and then in his second at bat in the bottom of the 3rd, he hits a solo home run to the left field pavilion for his 3rd home run of the season to tie the ball game up at 1 a piece until Cody single to left and advanced to second on the outfielders error. Justin Turner then came into his second at bat and hit an RBI single to drive in Cody Bellinger for his 9th run batted in for the season.

Coming in the 4th inning the Giants were taken down by Urias as he is carrying this ball club through the first few innings. Max Muncy came up to bat to lead off the bottom of the 4th and as he been struggling in the past few games, as manager Dave Roberts pushed him down the line up from lead off to batting 6th, hits his 4th home run of the season and his 3rd against the Giants to deep right field as they take a comfortable 3-1 lead, but again the dodgers come up with another home run and this time a two run home run by Will Smith for his 2nd of the season. Dodgers started the season slowly by not hitting many out the park, but over the last few games they have left the yard more than any other team this season.

As Julio Urias leaves the game after 4 innings, allowing 3 hits on 78 pitches with 2 strike outs and only allowing up 1 earned run. Not sure why he was taken out so early but we are used to this type of pitching changes with Dodgers Manager Dave Roberts. Giants tried putting up some runs in the top of the 5th but failed. Dodgers ended up with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 5th with nobody out. Giants P Jeff Samardzija hit two batters and allowed the other runner to get on and was taken out the ball game allowing 7 hits on 90 pitches with 4 earned runs. Dodgers got another run with Chris Taylor fielder’s choice allowing Cody Bellinger to score.

Dodgers bring in young guy Dennis Santana to pitch in the 6th inning and allowed a solo home run by Wilmer Flores for his 2nd of the year. Dennis then got out the inning by striking out 2 on 20 pitches. As we made our way to the 7th inning, Dennis is still in the game and started getting in trouble by allowing the first two batters on the Pablo Sandoval lined out to first and then pinch hitter Alex Dickerson. Dodgers with a pitching change bringing in Scott Alexander and strikes out Dickerson and gets out the inning by striking out Yastrzemski to head into the bottom of the 7th with the Giants trailing 6-2.

Giants get the dodgers in the bottom of the 7th, hoping to get a chance to climb back into this game. Into relieve in the top of the 8th is fan favorite Dodgers P Joe Kelly coming in with a 6-2 lead. We remember what happened about a week ago when they were playing the Houston Astros as the benches cleared after Joe Kelly threw at Astros SS Carlos Correa. He is currently waiting on word from MLB in regarding his 8 game suspension he received earlier in the week. Kelly came into tonight’s game and had a scoreless 8th inning.

Edwin Rios decided to join the home run club today after he hits one deep to right field over the visitors bullpen and take a commanding lead 7-2 heading to the 9th. Dodgers P Jake McGee making his 5th appearance of the season here in the 9th and takes care of the Giants in order to end the game.

Dodgers next game is Saturday evening with Clayton Kershaw taking the mound for the 2nd time this season against the Giants Johnny Cueto and the action starts 9ET/6PT.
