Rams receive Sammy Watkins from Bills in blockbuster trade

August 12, 2017

Just a day before their preseason opener, the Los Angeles Rams made headlines with a blockbuster trade for Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins.

Early Friday morning the Rams announced a trade with the Bills for WR . In exchange for Watkins the Bills received CB and Rams’ 2018 second round pick, while L.A. also acquired the Bills’ 2018 sixth round pick.

ESPN’s was one of the first to break the news.

An obvious winner of the trade is second-year quarterback . In seven starts last season, Goff threw for 1089 yards, had five touchdowns and seven interceptions with a completion rate of 54.6. Head Coach has the task of bringing out all of Goff’s potential that the Rams expect from their 2016 No.1 overall pick.

The addition of Watkins gives Goff another weapon to target, which should aid his development under McVay and a new offense.

While healthy in 2015 Watkins averaged 80.5 yards a game. Although long-term health is a question mark for Watkins, the Rams were willing to take the risk to reap the potential rewards.

At the Rams kickoff charity luncheon in L.A., General Manager Les Snead answered questions about the deal.

“We definitely discussed it (Watkins’ injury history)…but when we dove into it we felt comfortable taking the risk, making this move and going forward.”

McVay also noted that acquiring Watkins simply adds to L.A.’s receiver depth and said he

‘Will certainly help our offense’.

It safe to say the Rams have put last year’s struggles behind them and are moving forward with McVay and Goff at the helm. Snead is putting the right talent around them to give them the best chance at being successful. He even talked about how well L.A.’s offseason has gone and about looking forward to the future.
