USC hosts the Stanford Cardinals in an early PAC 12 meeting that proves they are a team to beat.
This has been a tough matchup for USC the last couple of years as Stanford’s physicality has had the advantage. USC has the quarterback advantage, however, with Sam Darnold under center. Darnold is still working on his footwork in the pocket but he’s cool in the gun when he faces pressure. USC’s defense dominated up front in this matchup and kept Stanford’s running game at bay.
The Trojans also have a great offensive line, which makes them a good football team under the wing of Coach Clay Helton. They had a whopping 624 yards of offense that night with Uchenna Nwosu being a spark for them and the most dominant player on the field.
Ajene Harris was huge on defense for the Trojans, which is what they needed because that’s where championships are won and lost.
Stanford struggled with the run game and barely got going in the final seven minutes of regulation. However, the Cardinals secondary was great on defense limiting the touches of the Trojans high-powered offense.
Darnold threw for four TDs passes because USC’s wide receivers were tremendous but he’s shaping up to be one of the best QBs in the country.
The Trojans also have two great running backs in Freshman Stephen Carr (reminiscent of Reggie Bush) and Junior Ronald Jones the second.
This is a huge year in PAC 12 NCAA Football for the Trojans all around. Helton even has a chance to be Coach of the Year. The Trojans are disciplined, physical and loaded with talent, and this year they’ll try to make a run for a PAC 12 championship.
Right now the Trojans are a top-five playoff contender. Nwosu is the playmaker and difference maker for the Trojans and Darnold’s leadership on and off the field is what separates him from other PAC 12 quarterbacks.
In the game against Stanford, Darnold completed 21-of-26 passes for 316 yards and only had 2 interceptions. He did well outside the pocket and threw the ball in tight windows.
Trojans wide receiver Deontray Burnett helped Darnold by catching 9 passes for 121 yards and 2 touchdowns. He certainly proved no one can guard him in one-on-one man coverage. USC improved their record to 2 and 0 after that game then beat Texas September 16th in an OT thriller. They are a team to beat and have great chances of claiming the Pac 12 title.
