NBA Summer League Day 2 standouts
Spurs 103, Hawks 81
Spurs guard, Derrick White has another solid game. Tonight, White finished the game with 21 points, 6 rebounds, 9 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks.Last night White was all offense, tonight White handled business on both sides of the ball. The Spurs went as White went tonight. Tonight, White played more on the ball, and showed that he can play the point if needed. Although White had 4 turnovers he also almost finished the game with 10 assists. White played well in pick-in-roll situations, got to his spots on the court without seeming rushed at all and made the plays that were needed for the Spurs to walk out with a win. White only made 2 threes tonight. Most of his points were in the paint and from mid-range. Whites strongest attribute is scoring, and he does it in an array of ways. Threes, mid-range, lay-ups, in transition and with floaters. White has looked like the best player in summer league thus far.
Heat 89, Lakers 74
Second year player Derrick Jones Jr. from the university of UNLV is on a two- way contract with the Miami Heat and Sioux Fall Sky Force. Jones will be entering his third year in the NBA. Jones Jr. is a lengthy super athletic forward. In the first quarter everyone for the Heat couldn’t seem to miss, but as the game went on everyone cooled down and Jones Jr. continued to play at a high level. Jones Jr. was effective on both sides of the ball. Jones Jr. is a high motor player, who is always moving. On defense Jones Jr. stayed getting into the passing lanes which is why he ended the game with 3 steals. Jones Jr. was also a rim protector for the Heat finishing the game with 4 blocks. Offensively, Jones Jr. did a good job at slashing to the basket, getting out in transition, and moving without the ball to get easy baskets. Jones Jr. is best around rim, but also has a touch from the outside, Jones Jr. had a game high of 21 points.
Grizzlies 95, Jazz 92
Memphis guard, Kobi Simmons is a second year player from the university of Arizona. Last night Simmons performed well, and tonight was no different. Simmons is a slasher who is looking to get straight to the rim. Occasionally, he’ll pull up from mid-range and spot up from three, but he’s streaky from both areas. His strength is getting to the basket. The Grizzlies has Simmons playing on and off the ball, but he’s better at the two because he’s a scorer more than a passer. Simmons shot 8-18 from the field finishing the game with 20 points.
Warriors 71, Kings 54
Jordan Bell and the Warriors ran away with this one tonight. Bell filled up the stat sheet tonight. Bell finished the game with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals and 4 blocks. Bell is known as a hustle player and he’s experienced. So, the rebounds, steals and blocks are going to come. It’s the shooting and passing that stood out tonight. Bell shot 4-5 from the field. Three of the four field goal makes were jump shots. Bell making jump shots has to be a good sign for the Warriors. Shooting and passing falls right into the Warriors system and Bell displayed that tonight.
