Sammy Watkins introduced as a Ram before L.A.’s preseason opener

August 12, 2017

The Los Angeles Rams traded for Sammy Watkins to add another weapon on offense and they introduced the wide receiver Saturday.

Saturday afternoon joined his new team in Los Angeles. Although he didn’t join the club with enough time to prepare for and play in the Rams’ preseason opener, he spoke to the media in the pregame press conference.

New Rams WR Sammy Watkins meets with the media at the Coliseum upon arriving in Los Angeles.

Rams Insider wrote that despite not having much time to meet his new coach and teammates, Watkins showed ‘excitement’ to be a Ram.

“I can’t wait to get on the field and figure those guys out — they’ll learn my speed, I’ll learn the way they throw. And, really, just learn the offense — that’s the biggest thing.”

Watkins also shed some light on how little information he has, as of now, as he told reporters he’s unsure of his role in the offense.

“I don’t even know the offensive plays right now, so I’m just willing to do anything,” Watkins said. “Wherever they put me — X, Y, Z — I’m just trying to fill in the void and help this team win.”

Considering Watkins arrived in L.A. just hours before the Rams had to play the Dallas Cowboys, it’s understandable he hasn’t had time to learn the offense or talk to Head Coach Sean McVay about his plan for Watkins.

One of the question marks about Watkins that made the trade for him somewhat of a gamble, if it can be called that at all, is Watkins’ injury history. However,  that Watkins said he’s, “100 percent healthy.”

“The foot thing is out the door,” Watkins said. “Probably have to get in a little bit better shape, but other than that I’m fine.”

If Watkins is back at full strength, then L.A. will have a serious deep threat on their side. In 2015 when Watkins was last fully healthy he averaged 80.5 yards a game. With WR still nursing a hamstring, Watkins brings insurance to the receiver position, and as McVay said at the Rams’ Kickoff Charity Luncheon, he’ll “Help add some depth to that receiver room.”

It’s clear from Saturday’s presser Watkins is excited to play for L.A., and based on Mcvay’s statements the Rams are happy to have him.
