The Fast Break

NBA Summer League Standout Jayson Tatum

July 15, 2017

The 2017 NBA Summer League tournament in Las Vegas has been so much fun to watch as a fan, and one draft pick has changed my opinion so far, Jayson Tatum.

The most surprising player in summer league in my eyes has been Bostons SF Jayson Tatum. Honestly, when the Celtics drafted Tatum at No. 3, I thought they were making a mistake. I have seen Tatum play a couple of times in college at Duke and he didn’t impress me, but he’s changed my mind in this years summer league.

Tatum woke me up after scoring the game winning shot against the 76ers against the No. 1 overall pick Markelle Fultz. Then I was convinced this kid was good after seeing him demonstrate Kobe-like footwork, hitting contested jump shots, and recording double-doubles. He’s making shots off the dribble, spot up jumpers, and scoring with his back to the basket at age 19! Not to mention he’s 6-foot-8 and lengthy. I’m interested to see how Celtics Head Coach Brad Stevens will use him during the season.

It’s funny because during the mock draft Tatum wasn’t even mentioned to go in the top three, and then the Celtics end up taking him at No. 3. So far, Tatum is looking like a steal in the draft, and I look forward to seeing what he has in store for Celtics fans.
