Winners and Losers from Week 2 of the NFL

September 19, 2017

LOSERS

New Orleans Saints

The Saints followed up their Week 1 loss to the Minnesota Vikings with a Week 2 loss to the Patriots. This, despite having at quarterback and Sean Payton as head coach.

Not to mention the fact New Orleans has two top running backs in and the newly acquired .

Brees threw for 356 yards and 2 TDs but it wasn’t enough to beat New England. Although it seems Brees and Payton’s magic has worn off over the last few years, it wasn’t going to be easy beating a Patriots team coming off of a Week 1 loss and looking to right the ship.

But despite the tough luck of their Week 2 opponent, the Saints find themselves in a hole early on sitting in last place in the NFC South.

San Francisco 49ers

The Niners have had a tough go around since the team parted ways with , a coach that took them to the NFC championship game three years in a row including a trip to the Super Bowl.

This year the team is under a completely new regime after Chip Kelly went one and done as a HC for the Faithful.

Also out of San Francisco went both the team’s QBs from last season, and , and a bevy of players on offense and defense.

Kyle Shanahan is the new coach of the 49ers and in his first season as a HC he’s struck out twice.

San Francisco’s 0-2 start prove they still aren’t any good despite a new coaching staff and front office.

They’re starting at quarterback who threw for less than 100 yards and had no TDs in Week 2. On the bright side, Hoyer didn’t turn the ball over and the Niners’ defense held the Seattle Seahawks to just 12 points.

But with the first two games of the season in the books, it appears the more things change the more they stay the same for San Francisco.

New York Giants

The Giants were on the losers list from last week and find themselves here again. Their offense put up another pathetic performance and this time they had Jr. in tow.

Beckham played coming off of an injury so the loss doesn’t fall on his shoulders but he certainly didn’t help New York’s cause.

threw for  239 yards and a touchdown but, per usual, also threw an interception.

Coming into the season there were high expectations for the Giants’ offense with the team adding to their WR core of Beckham and .

But after two weeks their offense hasn’t found a rhythm and none of their receivers have had impactful games.

Marshall had an especially off night catching only one pass in five targets for 17 yards.

New York’s defense is sound and good enough to keep them in most games but their offense has been an extreme letdown and a team with Super Bowl aspirations is currently last in their division.

Dak Prescott

Dak Prescott is coming off an electric rookie year in which he received ROY honors. He opened up his sophomore season with a win in Week 1 against the Giants but finally got a hit with some adversity in Week 2.

The Dallas Cowboys lost 42-17 to the Denver Broncos but it wasn’t just the loss that hurt Prescott, it’s that it was his worst game thus far as a pro.

Prescott threw for 238 yards and 2 touchdowns against Denver but he threw two interceptions as well. To make matters worse Cowboys HC Jason Garrett blamed Prescott for the loss.

According to Garrett said,

When they play that style of defense, you have to be able to consistently attack with the passing game…We didn’t make the plays, for whatever reason. We really needed to have [consistent] success throwing the ball. We were not able to do that.”

Prescott echoed those statements.

“ If I made more plays, we give ourselves a chance in that game. I just simply didn’t make the plays. There’s no excuse for it.”

This is just one bad performance for Prescott that shouldn’t be blown out of proportion but it’s the first stain on Prescott’s otherwise pristine career.
